Activities

Throughout the each year there are many interesting activities to help keep you entertained and engaged with the other residents of Deakin and greater Monash Residential Services. We hope you will join us in as many activities as possible as it make the halls experience better for everyone.

O-Week

The first week of each year is dedicated to making sure the residents get to know the hall, each other, and the local area. Deakin runs a variety of activities to help out with this, one of the most popular is the Melbourne Scavenger Hunt. Residents travel in to Melbourne’s CBD and must take pictures of famous (and not-so-famous) landmarks.

Sport

Deakin participates in all of the inter-halls sporting competitions organised by MRS. Sports include Netball, Basketball, Australian Rules Football, Table-tennis, and Soccer.

Suppers

Every 2nd Sunday night a Resident Advisor organises a supper event for residents. Often combined with a theme, residents enjoy free coffee, hot chocolate, cakes, nibbles, ice-cream etc. This a laid-back event, held in the main common room, where students get to relax before the academic week begins.

Floor Outing

Each floor gets together at least once a semester to go out with their fellow residents and their Resident Advisor. These events are subsidised by the College Head, and have included nights out at ice-skating, trips to Phillip Island, meals in a local restaurant, ten-pin bowling, and cinema trips.

Floor Olympics

Once a year the Hall Society organises an inter-floor Olympics, where residents represent their floor and compete in events such as egg-and-spoon races, wheelbarrow races, spaghetti-face and three-legged races.

Theme Nights

Several times a year the College Head sponsors Theme Nights. All Deakin residents attend a specially prepared (and free) meal. Often the Hall Society runs a simultaneous function such as mock-weddings and trivia nights.

College Head's Dinner

The big social event on the Deakin calendar is the College Head’s Dinner. All the residents get dressed up, the official hall photo for the year is taken by a professional photographer, and a fine three-course meal is eaten. In recent years, the event has been topped off by a fantastic live jazz band playing throughout the meal and for dancing after.
