Resident Facilities
Rooms:
Deakin Hall has large single rooms, which are carpeted, heated, and basically furnished. The student rooms are also equipped with individual telephone and computer points. Every student room is furnished with a bed, desk, desk chair, arm chair, book shelves, wardrobe and a heater. All bedding is provided. The two bed sheets and a pillow case are changed and laundered each week.
Residents are responsible for making their own beds and cleaning their own rooms. Vacuum cleaners are provided as a service for residents to clean their rooms. There are smoke detector alarms installed in every room and residents are advised to check the smoke alarms in their rooms regularly, and report faults to the Operations Office.
Deakin Hall has limited number of énsuite rooms with private bathroom and toilet. For standard student rooms, bathrooms and toilets are shared and are maintained by cleaning staff at Monash Residential Services.
Computers and Telephones in room:
There is a computer and telephone network point in every room. Residents need to supply their own computers and telephones. Computers need to have a network card to be able to access the University network, which in turn will provide access to the Internet. Residents can activate their telephone connections by contacting the Operations Office.
Mail:
Although we are aware that most of you are all very techno savvy and use the internet for your communication, we do provide alternatives. Mailboxes are located on the ground floor, opposite the snack vending machine. You will be issued a mail box key when you move in to Deakin Hall, using which, you open your mail box. Mail is distributed according to the initial of your surname.

There are ample car parking spaces at Deakin and residents may freely obtain a parking permit from the Operations Office. Security personnel patrol the premises, however, Monash Residential Services does not take responsibility for the security of your vehicle. |
The Monash computer network extends itself into the Deakin computer lab with four computers and a laser printer. The computer lab is furnished with comfortable chairs and air conditioning and is situated on the first floor, directly above the foyer. Course related work is always a priority in the computer rooms.The computer lab is maintained by the computer co-ordinators of Deakin Hall. |

Common Study:
Adjacent to the computer room is a study, otherwise known as the Shirley Trembath room. The study is made available for group-work, and is furnished with tables, chairs and a whiteboard.

Laundry rooms are present on each floor, which have one washing machine and two tumble dryers in those rooms. An ironing board and iron are provided too. In Deakin Hall, as the laundry rooms are situated on the floors where residents live, the laundry times are restricted from about 8am in the morning till 11pm late at night. Residents are to provide their own washing liquid or powder and are responsible for their clothes. Shelves and drying racks are provided for temporary use. |
Music Room:
Deakin Hall has a Music Room which has a piano and a stereo. Residents are welcome to take their own instruments and practise in this room. It is a well designed room for some serious music practice. The entertainment during some of the regular social events here at Deakin Hall, (Pasta Night) were and are usually provided by a number of talented residents showcasing a range of musical styles and instruments.

Deakin's own home theatre system! The darkened Projector room is situated behind the Common room. With surround sound, overhead projector, DVD and VCR, you're sure to enjoy a film as if you were at the cinema! Deakin is one of the few halls to have access to the Foxtel network, enabling residents to view international programs and sporting events.Along with the two projectors, there are four other TV rooms in Deakin. Two smaller rooms on 3rd and 2nd floors along with the TV in the Poolroom and in the Loft (just another common room in 2nd Floor New Deakin). Deakin's own HOME THEATRE SYSTEM, and perhaps even better - it is connected to FOXTEL Cable. What this means is, that residents get access to some exclusive sport and other entertainment television channels which are not usually free to air. This room is attached to the main common room on ground floor and consists of a DVD and Video player too. Depending on the demand, the Deakin Hall Society or the local residential support team, organises special movies nights in this room. |
Table Tennis:
Deakin Hall has two table-tennis tables, which are located in the main common room of Old Deakin. It is a great indoor sport to play and relax at anytime. Residents need to have to their own Table Tennis bats and balls.
Bathrooms and Toilets:
All floors at Deakin Hall have bathrooms and toilets situated at a centrally accessible area. They are shared by both genders and are maintained daily (weekdays) by the cleaners. The ground floor rooms have a different bathroom and toilet system to the rest. One bath and one toilet is shared between residents in three rooms. Other basics like washing basins, hand dryers, toliet paper and washing liquid are provided.

A large multi purpose common room is located on the ground floor of Old Deakin Hall. The ground floor kitchen and the projector room are attached to this big room. This room is also used, to organise social functions by the Deakin Hall Society between semester periods. It's a place where residents can catch up on the daily happening around Australia, as the three major newspapers are provided here. The common room is equipped with a projector, video player and a stereo player for all the basic entertainment needs of the residents.
Every floor has at least one kitchen and some have as many as three! Kitchens are clean and modern, equipped with one or two electric ovens, a toaster, microwave, refrigerator and a hot water urn. As a service to residents, dish-washing liquid and sponges are provided. Kitchens are cleaned daily by cleaning staff, though students are expected to clean their own crockery and cutlery. Cupboard storage is also available for food and equipment.

Located on 1st floor, Old Deakin, the poolroom is yet another spacious common area where residents can take a break from the daily grind. The poolroom has a television and couches and also tables & chairs for that ideal TV dinner. The poolroom was refurbished in 2003.
